The market trend system is what sets Water Empire apart from basic clicker tycoons. Water prices fluctuate over time, and selling during a high trend can dramatically increase your profit compared to selling during a low trend.

How Market Trends Work

The Hold Strategy

The core advanced strategy in Water Empire is simple: produce continuously, sell selectively.

  1. Keep your pumps running at all times to fill storage tanks.
  2. When tanks approach capacity during a low trend, resist the urge to sell.
  3. Wait for the trend indicator to show a price spike.
  4. Sell your entire stored volume at peak price.
  5. Repeat the cycle.

💡 Key Insight: Storage tank capacity directly limits your market timing ability. Bigger tanks = longer wait times without losing production. Upgrade storage before adding more pumps.

Storage vs. Market Timing

Your storage capacity creates a buffer between production and selling:

Common Mistakes

Sell Decision Tree

Use this every time you consider selling:

  1. Is trend HIGH or rising sharply? → Yes → Sell full storage now.
  2. Is tank ≥95% full? → Yes + trend moderate → Sell now OR emergency storage upgrade.
  3. Is tank ≥95% full? → Yes + trend low → Upgrade storage; only sell if upgrade unaffordable.
  4. Is tank <80% full? → Hold regardless of trend (unless you need cash for critical upgrade).
  5. Default: Hold and keep pumping.

Default strategy is full dump at peak. Partial sells are advanced — see below only if you have large late-game storage.

Recorded Unit Prices

Unit sell prices observed in AlmostDark / AccelToWin sessions. Your HUD may show the same bands with slight variance after patches.

TrendApprox $/unit18K dump80K dumpAction
Trough (low)~$1$18,000$80,000Hold
Good~$6$108,000$480,000Sell if you need a buy now
Peak~$9$162,000$720,000Full dump

Peak vs trough on an 18K free tower is +$144,000 per dump. Cycle length is roughly ~20 seconds between shifts — watch the HUD, not a stopwatch. Interactive estimates: Sell Calculator.

Market Trend Phases Explained

While exact timing varies each cycle, market trends typically move through these phases:

PhaseWhat You SeeApprox $/unitWhat To Do
Trough (Low)Price at or near minimum, downward arrow~$1Hold — keep pumping into storage
RecoveryPrice climbing from low, arrow turning upRisingHold — spike likely incoming
Peak (High)Price at or near maximum, upward/green indicator~$9Sell now — dump full storage
DeclinePrice falling from peak, arrow turning downFallingStop selling — begin storing again

Example Scenario

Same 18,000 water (free tower capacity) sold at trough vs peak:

Panic Sell (Trough ~$1)

  • 18,000 × $1 = $18,000
  • Tank empty during the next low cycle
  • Repeated trough sells starve upgrades

Smart Sell (Peak ~$9)

  • 18,000 × $9 = $162,000
  • +$144,000 vs trough on the same water
  • Funds Pump Jack ($12K) or plot #1 ($25K) easily

Over several cycles, patient peak sells fund the production ladder much faster than identical pumps with panic sells.

Advanced: Partial Sells (Late Game Only)

Only consider partial sells when you have very large storage and understand your trend cycle:

If you're early or mid game, ignore partial sells — full peak dumps are simpler and more profitable.

Market Trends + Upgrade Synergy

Market timing interacts directly with your upgrade choices:

Storage +1 tierHold 1 more low cycle before forced sell
Pump +1 tierMore water to sell at next peak
Tech: capacity boostEffectively free storage upgrade
Tech: market insightBetter trend visibility (if available)
Base expansionMore pumps = bigger peak sells
