Layout in Water Empire is about slot efficiency, not decoration. Bad placement wastes land, blocks 2-slot industrials, and forces early expansions. This guide covers what we can verify from gameplay β€” exact grid sizes may vary by plot tier.

Three principles: (1) Storage within easy walk of the sell point. (2) Leave contiguous space for 2-slot pumps. (3) Fill current plot before buying expansion ($25K / $175K).

Placement Slot Rules

RuleDetailSource
Most pumps = 1 slot Wells, windpipes, Pump Jacks typically one placement each
Industrial Pump = 2 slots Needs two adjacent placement spots β€” expand before stacking AccelToWin / AlmostDark
Large tanks = big footprint Heavy-Duty Wooden / Glass tanks take more ground than barrels
Expansion adds land, not income Empty new zones earn $0 until filled Strategy

Early Layout (0–30 min)

  1. Claim and place the free 18K Water Tower in a central, reachable spot.
  2. Place 3–4 wells/pipes in a line or L-shape β€” leave one open 2-slot gap for later industrials.
  3. Buy Pump Jack ($12K) into an existing slot by replacing a 1/sec well when possible.
  4. Keep a clear walk path from spawn β†’ tanks β†’ sell point (manual sell every cycle).

Mid Layout Checklist

  • Replace, don't only add: a 750/sec purple pump beats five 8/sec pipes on the same slots.
  • Before Industrial: confirm two free adjacent slots; if not, expand ($25K) or pick up low-value pumps.
  • Tank side vs pump side: put large tanks on the edge so they don't fragment the pump grid.
  • Watch other bases on your 8-player server for compact arrangements β€” bases are independent.

Misplaced Item β€” Pickup Refund

Picking up a misplaced item refunds about $750 in recorded gameplay (AlmostDark). Use pickup to fix bad early placements β€” better than living with a blocked 2-slot forever.

Pickup is for mistakes, not a money farm. Don't spam place/pickup as a strategy.

When Layout Forces Expansion

Expand only when all of these are true (also covered in Base Expansion):

  • No free slots for your next planned pump (especially 2-slot industrial)
  • Current pumps are not all low-tier junk you could replace instead
  • You have cash for expansion plus at least one productive fill after
SituationDo this
Empty slots + weak pumpsUpgrade / replace β€” don't expand
Full plot + need IndustrialExpand #1 ($25K) or free 2 slots via pickup
New zone empty after expandFill immediately β€” empty land = $0
Tanks overflow in <2 minStorage / layout for tanks β€” not more pumps
